Summer Camp Themes
Fun-filled activities to take advantage of the wonderful resources we have available in the Washington, D.C. area.
July 2 – July 6 – World of Paper
The students will learn to manipulate paper and glue in variety of ways to create 3-D pieces of art using Papier Mache. They will learn about recycling as they use shoe boxes, paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls and newspaper to create masks, puppets and animals. They will decorate their projects using paint, construction paper and tissue paper.
July 9 – July 13 – Introduction to Printmaking
Fine Art printmaking involves creation of images from a master plate. The students will explore different printmaking methods such as collagraph printmaking, monotype printing, silk screening, and relief printing. They will experiment with Cyanotype to make solar powered prints with an appearance of linoleum block print. The children will also be introduced to Papyrus and Hieroglyphics as the history of printmaking.
Field Trip – The week will end with a visit to the National Museum of African Art for a workshop on Ghanaian Adinkra Stamped Cloth.
July 16 – July 20 – Geometry and Structural Mechanics
The students will learn about Geometrical Shapes, and the practical use of these shapes in the real world. They will learn about bridges, and the world’s tallest structures, and shapes contained in their construction. They will identify the three most prevalent shapes in these structures, and use them to create their own tallest structure. They will experiment with paper, balsa wood and straws to create their own masterpieces in small groups.
Field Trip – The children will visit the National Building Museum for a hands-on workshop on Design and Architecture.
July 23 – July 27 – Animal Alphabet of the World

They will learn about magnets, and the uses of them in everyday life. They will do experiments to determine which objects are attracted to magnets, and will learn that magnets are the strongest at the poles. They will make their own magnet and compass.
August 6 – August 10 – Hands-on-Science – Energy: Light and Thermodynamics
The students will learn that light is a form of energy found naturally or from artificial sources. They will do experiments to determine how light travels. They will learn about reflection and refraction. They will do experiments to see that white light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow. They will also learn to categorize objects as transparent, translucent or opaque.
They will use a thermometer to measure temperature, and learn that heat is a type of energy that travels from warmer objects to colder objects. They will do experiments to learn that darker colored objects absorb more solar energy than lighter colored objects.
August 13 – August 17 – Under the Sea
The students will be introduced to the different types of vertebrates and invertebrates found in the major oceans of the world. They will learn about jellyfish, octopus, and sea anemone; they will also learn the differences between sharks and dolphins and whales.
